What is the UK Ancestry Visa?

Hong Kong BN(O) visa

If you are a commonwealth citizen and one of your grandparents was born in the UK, you can apply to enter the UK for a period of 5 years. The visa gives you the permission to work, study and access the NHS (National Healthcare).

You will be able to apply for settlement  after 5 years, and British citizenship 12 months after obtaining settlement.

Any eligible family members may also be able to apply as your depandant/s.

Who Can Apply for a UK Ancestry Visa?

You can qualify for the visa providing you meet the following criteria:


  • Are a Commonwealth citizen
  • Be aged 17 or over
  • Be abe to finacially support yourself andy any dependants without help from public funds
  • Are able to and plan to work in the UK


    Your grandparent must also have either been:

  • Born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
  • Born before 31 March 1922 in what is now Ireland
  • Born on a ship or aircraft that was either registered in the UK or belonged to the UK government


Also note that you can still claim UK ancestry if you/your parents were adopted, however you cannot qualify through step-parents.


How Do I Apply for the Visa?

You must make the application online via the .gov website before you travel to the UK and the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you plan to travel to the UK.


How Much does it Cost?

The Home Office Fee

The Current Home Office fee for UK Ancestry visa applications is currently £637, and if successful you will be granted 5 years leave to enter/remain in the UK.


The Immigration Health Surcharge

You will also need to pay for the Immigration Health charge which gives you access to the National Health Service (NHS) for the duration of your visa term. This fee is mandatory and is currently £624 per year (for adults) which equates to £3,120 for the 5 years of leave.   The IHS fee for children (under 18yrs old) is £470 per year, so £2,350 for 5 years.


The IHS fee/s must also be paid in full and up front.

Can I include Family Members on my Application?

Your family members may also be able to apply as your dependants. These can include your:

 

  • Spouse or Civil partner
  • Unmarried partner (you will need to evidence that you have been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply)
  • Child/ren (under the age of 18)

 

What are the other Requirements for the UK Ancestry Visa?

Ability and Intention to Work in the UK

You will need to evidence that you are able to and are planning to work in the UK, for example any offers of employment you have received or a business plan if you will be self-employed.


Maintenance and Accomodation Requirement

You must be able to evidence that you can financially support and adequately accomodate yourself and any family members when you arrive in the UK.  Examples of this can be:

 

  • Funds held in your bank account;
  • Support or accommodation that will be provided by friends or family


Tuberculosis (TB) certificate requirement

If you currenlty reside in one these countries on this list , you will also be required to take and produce a TB Test as part of your applcation.


These are the primary requirements, but there are many other elements for a successful UK Ancestry Visa application. There is whole host of information you must provide, and the type of supporting documents you must include will depend on your circumstances.
